AXE, ICE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
1.1 Design and construction. The ice axe shall be 70 + 3 cm in length when measured from the top of the head to the point of the spike. The minimum axe head length (measured from pick end to adze end along the top curvature of the head) shall be 28 cm. The head shall be either stainless steel with a riveted chrome-molybdenum steel pick or a one-piece chrome-molybdenum steel head. The pick shall have ground teeth on its underside and a 15 degree angled droop. The adze (chopping portion of the head) shall be 55 + 1/2 mm wide and ground to a sharp edge. The head shall have a minimum 15.9 mm hole directly above the shaft for attachment of a wrist loop. The shaft shall be hollow aluminum, fiberglass or graphite reinforced fiberglass in construction. The spike shall be chrome- molybdenum steel and come to a sharp tapered point. The maximum weight shall be 1260 grams. The color of the finished ice axe shall be flat black produced by a baked on enamel on the shaft and black oxide finish on head and spike. The manufacturer’s identification symbol shall be stamped or painted on the ice axe shaft. The ice axe must be U. I. A.A. (Union International des Associations d’Alpinisme) approved.
